On 16 October 2023 we held our first Birmingham Green Doors visit to a non-domestic building – Selly Oak Friends Meeting House. This blog is my account of what we have learned so far. There is still more learning and monitoring to be done. We heard from Clare Peat (Meeting House Manager) about how work the Quakers had done over the years to lower their carbon footprint. Your chance to see energy saving destratification fans in action
In 2022 I gave energy saving advice to Selly Oak Friends Meeting House, through the Footsteps programme. One of the things I found was that because they have high ceilings, they were wasting heat due to a stratification effect. This is when warm air rises to the top, and pushes colder air downwards. A wonderful day learning about how Nigel and Marta made their home so warm and cosy … and low carbon
Nigel and Marta bought their new home in Acocks Green in 2016. The house was built by Birmingham City Council in 1958; Nigel and Marta were only the third occupiers of the house. The house had cavity wall insulation but apart from that it had little in the way of energy saving measures. On October the 15th 2022 they opened their door to visitors through Birmingham Green Doors. There were…
